MRD: Custom lighting & Systems, Exteriors

The World is the largest privately-owned luxury yacht on the planet. In 2012, MRD designed and installed new lighting for the exterior and interior of the ship as well as a custom touchscreen control system accessible from the Bridge. The funnel’s architecture was accentuated using flood lights located within recessed, custom designed enclosures that are watertight and flush with the deck surface. Over 900m of warm white LEDs were installed around the ship’s exterior profile to enhance and promote the ‘yacht’ feel of the vessel and to showcase it while in port.

MRD also designed and installed lighting in the Quantum Lounge, a breakaway space for residents. MRD backlit an existing curved glass wall with RGB wall washers that change color throughout the day and can be seen through the large circular windows facing the exterior of the ship.

MS The World is a residential cruise ship. Unlike other cruise ships, which operate like a resort, it is operated like a condominium complex, with large cabins that can be purchased. The residents, from about 19 countries, live on board as the ship travels. Some residents choose to live on board full-time while others visit periodically throughout the year.[1] The ship is operated by ROW Management, Ltd., headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States.

The Quantum Lounge onboard The World is a diverse space where having a multitude of moods is an imperative. MRD backlit an existing curved glass wall with RGB wall washers which color change throughout the day and whose light can be seen through the large circular windows facing the exterior of the ship. Additionally, we designed and hand built a custom pendant over the backlit alabaster bar, and, for energy conservation, designed the entire room all in LED, including table lamps.
